Biomass

Biomass is material derived from living, or recently living organisms. The renewable energy industry has largely hijacked the term to describe plant matter grown to generate electricity or produce heat.

Boomeco supply the four major categories of biomass fuel:

  • Arboricultural arisings
  • Timber co-products
  • Recovered wood fuel
  • Agricultural by-products

The company is devoted to the intelligent use of wood, a renewable raw material to secure the regenerative energy supply of tomorrow and beyond.

Consumers of our biomass fuels range from international power companies through manufacturing plants and schools to domestic heat and power installations.

Last year Boomeco managed to divert over a quarter of a million tonnes of discarded wood from landfill. The wood was graded and carefully processed to meet the specifications of a number of the company’s renewable energy customers.

Imports

Imports of biomass fuels have significantly increased in importance as a consequence of the UK Governments Renewable Obligation (RO). The RO was introduced in 2002 (2005 in Northern Ireland) and runs until 2027. A national initiative to encourage renewable electricity generation.

Very simply the RO forces licenced electricity suppliers to source or produce annually increasing proportions of their electricity from a renewable source, e.g. wind, wave, solar, biomass.

Most of the major electricity generators modified their fossil fuel power stations to co-fire their boilers with a wide variety of biomass fuels. The demand is huge and can only be satisfied by implementing home produced biomass with imported renewable biomass, such as:-

  • Palm Kernel Expeller
  • Rubber wood chips
  • Olive meal pellets
  • Shea pellets
  • Peanut husk pellets
  • Sunflower husks
  • Coir briquettes
  • Bagasse

Boomeco has developed international supply partnerships with producers of non-indigenous renewable fuels. This combined with the Boomeco network of strategically selected operational UK ports enables the company to offer a seamless door to door supply service.
